Fighting for Injured Workers Throughout the Central Valley
Burn Injuries

Modesto Burn Injury Lawyers

30+ Years Representing Injured Workers in California’s Central Valley

Burn injuries are some of the most distressing injuries an individual can sustain. The emotional and physical toll of a burn injury is daunting—not to mention the staggering hospital bills victims often face. Burns can require years of doctors’ visits, physical therapy, and counseling to overcome the trauma. In many cases, these types of devastating injuries occur on the job. In fact, research shows that work-related fires and explosions account for more than 5,000 burn injuries each year in the United States, with some studies indicating that work-related accidents could be responsible for anywhere from 10 to 45% of all burns.

If you suffered catastrophic burns while on the job, you are entitled to workers’ compensation benefits to assist with the cost of medical treatment, lost wages, and job retraining, if necessary. However, workers’ compensation does not cover non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering. Our Modesto burn injury lawyers can help you determine whether you should seek workers’ comp benefits or if a third-party work injury or personal injury claim is the more ideal option for your unique situation.

Types of Burns

Burn injuries fall into three main categories. These include:

  • First-Degree Burns: Typically considered to be the mildest of all burn injuries, first-degree burns affect only the top layer of skin, known as the epidermis. Victims may experience reddening of the skin and localized pain. First-degree burns, such as mild sunburns, can be effectively treated at home with over-the-counter ointments and other home remedies.
  • Second-Degree Burns: Second-degree burns are somewhat more severe than first-degree burns and are usually considered moderate injuries. Second-degree burns affect both the upper layer of skin (epidermis) and the lower layer of skin (dermis). They often result in redness, blistering, and significant pain. Second-degree burns are more serious when they cover large areas of the body, certain areas such as the face or hands, or when someone with a weakened immune system is the victim, as they are more prone to infection.
  • Third-Degree Burns: Considered the most serious type of burn by most medical professionals, third-degree burns require immediate emergency medical attention. Third-degree burns penetrate the epidermis and the dermis and, in some cases, may affect surrounding tissue and bone. Symptoms include charred (whitened or blackened) skin, numbness, swelling, blistering, and severe pain. Third-degree often require skin grafting and other intensive treatment.

Sometimes companies or individuals are responsible for burn injuries and can be held liable for the suffering they've caused.
